Kuala Lumpur, January 7th 2019 – The United Nations (UN) Global Compact Network Malaysia (GCMY) and its members have come together to spearhead industry action to tackle Climate Change and Human Rights issues in trade. The near-term objective is to mobilise Malaysian business to commit to minimum standards and long-term targets to make Malaysian-originating SDG Enablers in Climate Change and Human Rights.
Climate Change issues involve challenges such as pollution, carbon emissions, waste management, etc which lead to rising sea levels, extreme weather conditions, loss of biodiversity and many more. Human Rights issues encompass human trafficking, sexual exploitation, child labour which lead to poor working conditions, migrant abuse and possible harm among other things. Our Enablers will be the ones to take the lead in Malaysia and ASEAN to combat and reverse the prevalence of these issues.
We will be launching this new programme at our SDG Industry Dialogue Dinner happening on January 22nd January 2019. The programme will highlight the current state of efforts to tackle Climate Change and Human Rights issues in the region with perspectives from Private, Public, and Non-Governmental groups and discuss better solutions to the current challenges.
The SDG Enabler programme is scheduled to come to a climax in the 4th quarter of 2019 in conjunction with the United Nations (UN) General Assebmly (GA) in New York where the major focus will be on Climate Change. GCMY urges all organisations to come on board with us in tackling these issues as they impact us all.
